Want strength, energy and stamina? Rest!

Swinging and snatching kettlebells, lifting weights, pull-ups, sprints, deadlifts – all give you strength, energy and stamina, right?

Right, but not really.

While you throw kettlebells around all you really doing is stressing out your body. I did a nice workout today: plethora of kettlebell snatches, cleans and presses. After I was done, did I leave with larger muscles, more energy, or increased endurance?

Not really.

So when does this miracle of a change take place?

The growth happens when we rest.

Working out is like demolition. Team shows up, installs big wrecking ball and breaks everything in it’s way. Much damage is done.

When you rest you build. As you sleep and recover, the new and improved building is erected.

Want to be stronger, have more energy and stamina? All you have to do is rest!

The worst possible thing is to workout all the time at high intensity. All you doing is keep calling ‘demolition team’ back without giving ‘builders’ a chance to build.

Kettlebells are so effective because they work a whole body as a unit. All weak links are revealed and addressed.

That fact, however, can easily lead to overtraining and will stop progress in it’s tracks.

To make sure that your body recovers and gets a chance to build strength, cycle the intensity and volume of your workouts.

4 day training micro-cycle:

  • Day 1: high intensity
  • Day 2: easy intensity
  • Day 3: medium intensity
  • Day 4: medium/easy intensity

Make sure to listen to your body. It will tell you are recovered or not. How?

If you feel tired – make it an easy day and go rest.
Feeling great? Have a high intensity workout.

It’s that simple!

Every 4 to 6 weeks it is very beneficial to have an easy week. All workouts that week are in easy category. Let your body have a full recovery. You will have more strength, energy and stamina than every before.

What training cycles do you use in your training?

This is great information. My personal trainer, Christopher is always telling me this and (I should rest more. I am trying but it can be hard.
