10 tips for lower back pain relief: Tip #4 - Strong Abs

In many cases, lower back pain and tension stems from muscular imbalance of the core.

Weak, stretched abdominals + shortened and strong back muscles = chronic lower back tension and pain.

With abs stretched and back muscles tight and short, pelvic tilt changes. Hips tilt forward, stretching abdominals more and tightening back even further.

Lower back becomes quickly overwhelmed with this kind of pressure and lets you know that it is not happy – tension and then pain make appearances.

To find relief, strengthen abdominals to restore them to proper length thus restoring muscle balance, neutralizing pelvic tilt and relieving chronic tightness and pain.

Use the following abdominal exercises to restore pelvic muscle balance:

Week 1-3: Do exercise 1 – Abdominal Crunches. Start at 1-2 sets of 10. Try to get to the point where you can do 2-3 sets of 100

Week 4-6 Include exercise 2 – Abdominal Rollups. Start with 1-2 sets. Each set is 10 seconds each. Work your way to 45-60 seconds.

Great advice for dealing with back pain. I have enjoyed all your back pain tips. So far I have found that strengthening the lower back with deadlifts and the abs with various situps and twists really helps. Also if I am experiencing back pain during a workout, I do a couple sets of weighted pull-ups as it puts the spine into traction and relieves some of the pressure in the lower back.
