Fear of failure is a common barrier to successful weight loss. It stops all progress and often keeps us from trying all together.
No one likes thinking of themselves as a loser(I certainly don’t). So we don’t try.
The good news is that weight loss can be as easy or as hard as we want it to be.
What to do about Fear of Failure
- Take action – stop thinking and just do it. Act now. Do something crazy. Sign up for a marathon, go for a walk, ride a bike. Choose to act now.
- Look at mistakes as outcomes and results. There is no failure, only feedback.
- Be persistent. Keep on trying. Hate gym? Sign up for boot camp. Hate running? Find a pool and swim. Try different foods. Talk to different fitness trainers and nutritionists. Search the web. Talk to others who lost weight. Keep on going.
- Don’t take failure personally. Did you splurge a little and didn’t lose weight this week? It’s ok. There is always next week. Look at the big picture.
- Take it easy and don’t be so hard on yourself. In the worst case scenario you know exactly what doesn’t work for you. Didn’t lose any weight with Atkins diet? Great! You know what NOT to do! Remember that failure is an event, not a person.
- Think of making mistakes as a learning experience. You tried eating pizza and didn’t lose weight.. perhaps the lesson here is that you should try eating something else..
- Keep exercise and food diary. Do measurements and weigh-ins regularly (every 2-3 weeks). This way you can catch if you’re mistakes early on(not losing weight), review what you’ve done and try a different strategy/approach.
What have you done to overcome fear of failure?
