Sleep effects your appetite more then you think. There is a proven link between sleep and hormone activity(think appetite and weight gain).
Yes, those hormones again!
This time it’s Leptin and Grehlin – two hormones in charge of appetite. Sleep deprivation has a profound effect on which hormone gets synthesized.
- Leptin suppresses appetite
- Grehlin increases appetite
As we are deprived of sleep(yep, you guessed it)
- Amount of Leptin decreases
- Amount of Grehlin increases(Makes our appetite huge!)
As a result our appetite is always on and food consumption is through the roof.
Non stop eating will cause substantial weight gain despite attempts to diet and exercise.
What to do about it
- Got to bed and wake at the same time, everyday. Even on weekends(no, I’m not crazy)
- Have a light dinner(it’s hard to fall asleep with a full belly)
- Stay away from cigarettes, alcohol or caffeine
- Exercise regularly
- Make sure that your bedroom
- has comfortable sleeping temperature(cool works for most)
- is nice and dark
- is quite(use earplugs if you have to)
- Pick mattress and pillow that are comfy
- Sleep at night
- Start a relaxing bedtime routine(read a book, take a shower, listen to calm and soothing music)
- Go to bed when feeling tired

Not getting enough sleep will mess with more than weight loss. It can hurt your whole body and mind.
Insomnia is one of the worst symptoms I have with my fibromyalgia. I can go days without sleeping at all and then fall into an exhausted stupor.
I’ve tried going to bed at the same time and all that stuff, nothing works. I have something wrong with my cicadic rhythm called Delayed sleep phase syndrome. You can look it up if interested. It’s a chronic condition that I’ve had for as long as I can remember.
Medication will help me sleep, but I have adverse reactions to everything the doctor perscribes!
So, I just deal with it the best I can.
If anyone just has regular ole insomnia, then by all means try to fix it. Not sleeping regularly will kill you!

Sleep Apnea is also a problem with not getting enough sleep and weight is a major factor.

That is a great point that you guys have.
If you suspect that you have a sleeping disorder it would be the best to talk to a doctor or may be even check into a sleep clinic.
