I was watching a movie about gymnasts the other day and saw they were using a strap that has the same shape as the taping trick. I did a bit of searching and found this:

http://www.amazon.com/Beginner-Grip-Small-Pink-Velcro/dp/B0001WAJ58/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1216388833&sr=8-1

I haven't tried it out, but for $30, it just might be worth a shot.
